ABOUT THE AUTHOR: CHRIS CAPEHART
My dad was a pastor.
He cheated on my mom.
She committed suicide.
He died of cancer.
That isn’t just some sad poem. It is my reality; the life I was born into. I didn’t ask for it, but it was the hand I was dealt. In between these four sentences that have shaped my life are thousands of minutes, hours, and seconds filled with pain, fear, and many other emotions often hard to share.
Statistically speaking, I should be a cheater, in jail, strung out on drugs, an absentee father, abuser, or any other list of characteristics that kids fall into who have come from situations like mine… But something happened to me, or I should say, Someone. The overwhelming and undeserved grace of Jesus Christ picked me up in my darkest hours and carried me in a way I can only describe as divine.
A child is one of God’s best gifts. Perhaps you aren’t seeing it as a gift right now. Maybe you associate the word child with cramping your style, humiliation, a mistake, fear, anger... Or you might just be realizing that your child is the greatest asset you’ll ever have, but like any asset, you must choose to invest in it if you want the return.
You might not know that the manliest thing you can do is fight to be the father you always wanted or always hoped to be. But remember, you don’t have to fight alone; there is a perfect Father who will show you exactly what to do.
Whether your baby was planned, unplanned, or something in between, your child was meant to bring life to the world. And God has a plan for them, just like He has a plan for you. No matter your past or the decisions you’ve made, your story isn’t finished being written. You have the power, with God’s help, to write a brand new ending, an ending that creates the most important impact you’ll have in this world… Legacy.
